Floating Books bookshelf
Conceal Bookshelf
Creates an invisible book shelf on any wall.
I found this engenious idea available amongst many other places at VAT19 .
I think would look great in a kids bedroom placed at different levels creating not only a great place to store books, but also a unique decorative wall feature.
Conceal Invisible Book Shelves are a clever way to literally float books on your wall.
The ingenious design allows you to pile up to 20 lbs worth of books without being able to discern the support mechanism regardless of viewing angle.
The books simply appear to be floating.
The Conceal Invisible Bookshelf requires at least one hardcover book on the bottom. But, then you can add soft cover books or any other decor item.Simple and quick to install (all you need is a screwdriver and a wall)
Step 1:
Screw the Conceal Invisible Book Shelf into the wall (preferably into a stud) with the included hardware.
Step 2:
Insert the back cover of a hard cover book into the bottom lip of the Conceal Invisible Book Shelf. Fold the top of the book onto the horizontal ledge and you’re ready to stack!
Step 3:
Pile your kids books high! Grab those colourful kids books, pile them high on your “magical” floating book shelves. Once you have at least one hardcover book on the bottom of the Conceal Book Shelf, you can also stack paperback books, magazines, schoolbooks, you name it. The more colourful the better

DIY Shelf ideas for kids rooms
How cute is this cloud shelf from Modern Dose?
Adorable as it is functional, this new Cloud Shelf provides storage for books, furry friends and even a small back pack! Each shelf is laser cut from heavy grade metal and features a 6 inch deep shelf + hook for all their modern treasures. A stylish and decorative storage solution. You can buy it here on May 4th
The idea has got me thinking about DIY decorative shelves for kids rooms and how to make them cheaply and easily
For example if you’d rather not buy the metal cloud shelf (which incidentally is rather reasonably priced), you could make a similar one yourself in wood.
Jazz up a plain shelf
Take one shelf of your choice.
Draw a cloud shape onto a piece of wood or MDF.
Cut out the shape with a jigsaw, paint it and the shelf white.
Screw it to the wall and mount your shelf below it.
Alternatively you could simply paint the cloud shape on the wall behind a shelf and while you are at it, add some more cloud shapes around the room.
You could do the same thing with the Metal Cloud shelf like I’ve done below.
Here’s some more easy shelf ideas
The cat shelf
Take a simple shelf, stick a wall sticker or wall decal of your choice above it.
The cat is a wall decal from Misi. Available in matt black or grey. This decal is approximately 300 mm long. They have other cats in the range doing cute catty things. You can find the cat and spider decal here. (Leave the spider off if you don’t like spiders)
Sport Themed Shelf
Sports stickers from fotostick
Monkey Shelf for a jungle theme
Monkey wall sticker from GIGGLE
Screw in a couple of coat hooks in the monkeys hands and feet for a useful place to hang a bag or item of clothing.
Do you get the idea?
Take your child’s favourite theme, find wall stickers in that theme and stick them above a shelf that you could paint in a co-ordinating colour.
Now, I’ve got to tell you about one of my designs for a shelf that is coming soon.
It’s part of our robot room theme and is an easy paint by number design. You can see the rest of the robot paint by number collection here at Wallstory Murals or here at the Magic Mural Factory.
I hope to have this ready by the end of March, but contact me or leave me a comment if you need it sooner.
Classic Shelf from Pottery Barn Kids
Beautiful crown molding gives this shelf the look of an architectural built-in. Mounts anywhere you want to display pictures, children’s trophies, a few books or other decorative items.
Create a similar look with bought carboard or wooden letters that you decorate or simply paint white. These letters are normally stocked in most craft stores.

DIY Diamond headboard- (Faux tufted headboard)
Talking of Diamonds on the wall, I found this rather lovely DIY project over at Project Nursery.
Have you seen those custom tufted headboards?
Gorgeous, but perhaps just a bit too expensive for a kid-room-makeover-budget?
DIY: Penache For Pennies
Here is a DIY tip to create a lot of panache for just pennies.
The Faux Tufted Headboard
Supplies: Paint, Basic Wood Trim (I prefer the pre-primed trim; its easier to paint) Miter Saw, Tape Measure
A full-sized bed and measures 54″ wide. Make certain the width is at lease as wide as the mattress if you are using a different size. The height is totally up to you based on the look you are going for. Factor in the height of the back pillows to make sure it still can be seen once the bed is put together. Also make sure the finished height does not line up with anything else on the wall. Here the headboard is slightly higher than the mirror over the dresser.
I chose a harlequin (diamond) pattern for this room. With this particular design, the wall color and a pearly white were alternated. Then circles were painted on where the diamonds meet to mimic buttons. You can use real buttons or any embellishments you like to add more dimension and texture. Little freehand lines were added around the buttons to create “tufts”. The design was framed with a painted wood molding to finish the look . Get as creative as you like or if you get stuck for an idea, e-mail me at rebecca@projectnursery.com for help. Ciao!
Thanks Rebecca
How to paint a Diamond pattern on the wall
Wall Diamonds require a bit of measuring and taping. These diamonds were painted in a deeper tone of the pale yellow wall colour. Though the look is almost whimsical for a baby, this is the type of decorative detail that can grow with a child.
How to Paint a Harlequin Pattern
Thanks to Color Made Simple for this project
Diamonds can be everyone’s best friend. A diamond pattern on either an accent wall or in the entire room can be fun and casual or elegant and trés French. While it necessitates careful taping, this technique can add an incredible “ wow” factor to a bedroom, hallway, vestibule or dining room. To achieve this effect, you apply the lighter colour base coat, then create a tape grid of diamonds, filling some in with either a contrasting color or another finish in the same colour as the base.
Step 1: Paint Surface with Base Coat
After properly cleaning and preparing the surface, apply a base coat of True Value EasyCare eggshell finish paint in a colour of your choice. Base coat should be the lighter of the two paint colours you’ve selected. For a more subtle look, you can also use the same color in the eggshell finish that you plan to use in the semigloss finish (see example above). Allow the area to dry completely.
Step 2 : Measure Diamonds
Measure the width of the wall (or walls) and then divide by the desired width of your diamonds, usually 6 to 9 inches wide. Measure the height of your diamonds.
Step 3 : Mark & Mask Diamonds
Start at the upper left corner and mark off the diamonds, using a pencil. If the diamonds are 9″ wide, place a pencil mark at 41/2″ from the corner along the ceiling. Remember, the point of a complete diamond will have to begin half of the distance out from the corner. So, continue across and mark the point of the diamond every 9 inches. Now, using a level, connect the dots with painter’s tape to form the diamonds.
Step 4 : Determine Colors
Determine which diamonds will remain in the base coat color and which will be painted in the contrasting color. Go horizontally across the wall and put a pencil ” x” in those diamonds in a row. In the next row, mark the diamonds that are between those in the row above. Continue in this manner until the whole row is done.
Step 5 : Taping & Painting
Tape off the diamonds (or another geometric shape/pattern or your choosing) that will remain in the base coat color. Score the outer edge of the tape with your fingernail or plastic trowel, so paint will not bleed under tape. Cut in close to tape, then fill in the diamonds that have an “x” in them with True Value EasyCare semi-gloss or eggshell finish paint. Let paint dry completely and remove tape by gently pulling in a downward, angled motion.
